Vintage Japanese Ginbari Cloisonné Vase – Meiji Taisho Crane – 24.5cm

A beautiful and substantial Japanese ginbari cloisonné enamel vase, featuring an elegant red-crowned crane standing amongst stylised waves and reeds.

Dating stylistically to the late Meiji or Taishō period, circa 1900–1926, this striking vase is a wonderful example of traditional Japanese decorative metalwork.

The vase features a rich ruby-red background gradually transitioning into delicate pale turquoise, with shimmering silver-toned detailing throughout.

The distinctive ginbari technique incorporates a finely textured metallic ground beneath translucent enamel, creating an intricate reflective effect. The beautiful repeating fan-like patterns are particularly noticeable when viewed in natural light.

The crane, traditionally associated with longevity, happiness and good fortune in Japanese culture, is depicted with finely detailed feathers and elegant proportions.

The vase has a gently flared neck, rounded shoulders, tapering body and dark metal rims.

Condition

An attractive antique vase displaying age-related wear and imperfections consistent with its age and delicate enamel construction.

There are visible fine lines across areas of the enamel, including some surface cracks that can be felt to the touch, together with small dark pits, discolouration and possible minor enamel losses.

Some of the darker lines form part of the original decorative design.

Despite these imperfections, the vase retains its beautiful colouring, shimmering ginbari finish and impressive overall decorative appearance.
