Antique Japanese Cloisonné Jars – Matching Pair – Birds & Blossom

A beautiful and characterful matching pair of antique Japanese cloisonné enamel jars, believed to date from the late Meiji to early Taishō period, circa 1890–1920.

Both jars feature a striking turquoise-blue enamel ground, decorated with colourful birds in flight, delicate flowering branches, butterflies and foliage.

The intricate decoration incorporates fine metal outlines separating the individual enamel colours, characteristic of traditional cloisonné craftsmanship.

Each jar has an attractive rounded form with a wide open mouth, brass-coloured metal rims and enamelled interiors and bases.

The matching decoration makes these particularly appealing as a decorative pair, especially for collectors of Japanese antiques and traditional enamelwork.

Dimensions

Each jar measures approximately:

* Height: 9.5 cm
* Diameter: 12 cm

Sold together as a matching pair.

Age and Origin

Believed to be Japanese, dating from approximately 1890–1920, potentially the late Meiji or early Taishō period.

The attribution is based on the decorative style, construction and enamelwork. Neither jar bears an identifiable maker’s mark, and the precise age and origin have not been independently authenticated.

Condition

The two jars are in notably different condition.

Jar One – Better Preserved

In good antique condition overall, displaying attractive original enamel decoration.

There is age-related surface wear, fine crazing, minor imperfections and discolouration consistent with an older enamelled object.

Jar Two – Damaged

This jar has substantial historic damage, including areas of enamel loss, cracking and exposed underlying metal, particularly around the upper shoulder beneath the rim.

There are also smaller areas of enamel deterioration and surface wear elsewhere.

Despite the damage, much of the original decorative design remains visible, allowing the two jars to be displayed together as a matching pair.

Both jars show signs of age and use, including wear and discolouration to the metal fittings and enamelled surfaces.

Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the detailed images showing the damage. The photographs form an important part of the condition description.

A Charming Antique Pair

With their vivid blue enamel, traditional bird and blossom decoration and appealing rounded forms, these jars would make a distinctive addition to a collection of Japanese cloisonné, Asian decorative arts or antique enamelwork.

An attractive surviving matching pair, offered together and retaining their individual character and history.

Carefully packaged for safe delivery.
