Vintage Cobalt Blue Engraved Glass Egg | St George & Dragon | St Petersburg Handi-Work

Vintage Cobalt Blue Engraved Glass Egg – St George and the Dragon – St Petersburg Handi-Work

An exceptionally attractive cobalt-blue decorative glass egg featuring intricate frosted engraving, ornate geometric detailing and a surviving St Petersburg Handi-Work label.

The principal scene depicts a mounted warrior holding a long spear above a dragon-like creature, strongly reminiscent of the traditional story of St George and the Dragon.

The engraving is particularly impressive, with fine detailing to the horse’s mane, saddle, the warrior’s clothing and the dragon beneath.

The reverse features a gold-coloured mythical bird, resembling a phoenix, surrounded by floral decoration. Another panel displays an elaborate crowned monogram within an ornamental floral border.

Additional decoration includes draped ribbons, bows, latticework and intricately engraved borders, creating a richly decorated piece that looks especially beautiful when illuminated by natural light.

St Petersburg Label

The underside retains a surviving circular paper label reading “Handi-Work” and “St Petersburg”, with additional partially obscured lettering.

This is a particularly interesting feature and provides a useful connection to the decorative glass trade associated with St Petersburg.

The precise manufacturer and production date have not been established.
