Beautiful antique Chinese cloisonné enamel vessel, dating from the late Qing to early Republic period, approximately c.1890–1920.
An unusual and particularly decorative two-piece example, comprising a rounded cloisonné body standing on three small brass feet, together with a removable enamelled cup which sits neatly within the brass-rimmed opening.
The main body has a vivid turquoise blue ground decorated with colourful butterflies and flowers amongst extensive hand-formed scrolling wirework. Further decoration includes deep blue overlapping borders, red, black, white and yellow enamel detailing and a contrasting green enamelled underside.
The removable upper cup is also decorated in cloisonné with flowering branches against a turquoise ground and has a turquoise enamelled interior.
A charming small piece with considerably more character and complexity than the more commonly encountered miniature cloisonné vases.
Approximate measurements:
• Overall height with cup: 8.5 cm
• Height without cup: 6 cm
• Maximum diameter: 6.5 cm
• Two-piece construction
• Three brass feet
• Copper/brass body with cloisonné enamel decoration
• Chinese
• Circa 1890–1920
Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related wear, small enamel imperfections, pitting and surface marks consistent with its age and method of manufacture. There is a small old metal fitting/possible historic repair visible amongst the decoration and some oxidation/patina to the exposed metalwork. Please examine all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the condition description.
The precise original function has not been established, so it is being described simply as an antique cloisonné vessel with removable cup rather than attributing a specific ceremonial or practical use.
A lovely decorative survivor and an unusual addition to a collection of Chinese cloisonné, Asian antiques or miniature enamelware.
