A charming vintage Soviet-era Russian lacquer trinket box, hand painted with a colourful floral design and delicate gold decoration.
The domed lid features a vibrant arrangement of red, pink and yellow flowers with green foliage, surrounded by a finely painted gold floral border. Further gold decoration runs around the body of the box, while the interior is finished in a striking bright red.
The decoration is initialled/signed and dated ’88, dating the piece to 1988 during the Soviet period.
The box has a hard, cold-to-the-touch construction and appears likely to be lacquered metal, although I have not been able to confirm the underlying material conclusively. It is therefore being described conservatively rather than attributing it to one of the traditional Russian papier-mâché lacquer schools.
Dimensions:
• 7 cm diameter
• 4.5 cm high
Condition:
Good vintage condition with some light surface marks, rubbing and signs of age/use. Please study the photographs as these form an important part of the description.
A lovely decorative example of late Soviet Russian folk art, particularly attractive for its colourful floral painting, gold detailing and original 1988 date.
