Beautiful vintage Chinese plique-à-jour enamel decorative egg, intricately worked with colourful flowering branches against a translucent turquoise-blue ground.
The surface is formed from hundreds of small overlapping scalloped enamel cells, creating an exceptionally detailed background. Flowering branches wind around the egg in shades of green, yellow and soft mauve, with deep blue floral borders surrounding the small openings at the top and base.
Plique-à-jour is a particularly attractive form of enamel work in which the translucent enamel allows light to pass through the individual cells, producing an effect reminiscent of miniature stained glass. This piece looks especially lovely when displayed where natural light can illuminate the enamel.
The extensive fine wirework is particularly striking when viewed closely and gives the piece considerably more detail than a conventional cloisonné ornament.
Approximate measurements:
• Height: 7.5 cm
• Width: 5 cm
Condition:
Good vintage condition with age-related surface wear and small imperfections within the enamel and wirework. There are small bubbles, marks and variations visible within the enamel which are part of the character of the piece. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
The brass-coloured display stand shown in some photographs is for display purposes only and is not included.
A coordinating white floral plique-à-jour egg is also available separately.
