Russian Kholuy Lacquer Box Prince Gvidon Swan Princess Signed Sergeev Hand Painted

Russian Kholuy hand-painted lacquer miniature box depicting Prince Gvidon and the Swan Princess, signed by the artist M. Sergeev.

A beautifully detailed Russian lacquer box featuring a dramatic scene from Alexander Pushkin’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan, with Prince Gvidon beside the magical Swan Princess.

The miniature is finely painted against a rich black lacquer ground, with wonderful detail throughout the figures, swan, turbulent water, landscape and decorative gilt highlights.

The inscriptions along the lower edge identify the subject as “Князь Гвидон” (Prince Gvidon), the place of origin as Kholuy (Холуй) and the artist as M. Sergeev (Сергеев М.).

Kholuy is one of the traditional Russian centres renowned for lacquer miniature painting.

The box has a classic black lacquer exterior with a striking red lacquered interior. Fine gold-coloured decorative detailing continues around the sides.

Dimensions:
13 cm long
8 cm wide
3.5 cm high

Condition:
Vintage condition with age-related wear. There is visible lacquer/paint loss and chipping to several corners and edges, including the lower right corner of the painted lid close to the artist’s signature. There are also smaller marks and signs of use.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

Importantly, the principal painted scene remains highly attractive, colourful and detailed.

A lovely example for a collector of Russian lacquer miniatures, Kholuy painting, Pushkin-related pieces or traditional folk art.
