A striking large antique set of Portuguese brass balance scales, dating from approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1920.

Standing approximately 57 cm tall, these are a particularly decorative example, surmounted by a beautifully modelled bull’s head with horns and a suspended ring through its nose.

The long brass balance beam terminates in decorative hooks supporting two circular weighing pans on chains. The central column rises from an unusually shaped brass base incorporating a graduated set of brass weights.

The combination of the bull’s-head finial, tall column, suspended pans and integral weight holder is characteristic of Portuguese and Iberian balance scales of this period. Comparable examples are variously dated from the late 19th into the early 20th century.

A wonderful piece of antique weighing equipment which has now become an extremely decorative object in its own right. Its substantial proportions make it particularly effective displayed in a kitchen, dining room, shop interior, restaurant or alongside other antique scientific and commercial instruments.

CONDITION

Very good antique condition overall with surface wear, marks, tarnishing and variations in patina consistent with age and previous use.

The brass has deliberately not been heavily polished and retains an attractive aged surface.

The balance mechanism moves and the pans remain suspended from their chains. The scales are being sold as an antique decorative and collectable object rather than as a calibrated modern weighing instrument, and no guarantee of weighing accuracy is made.

Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description and show the condition, construction and wonderful aged character of the piece.

A substantial and increasingly difficult-to-find decorative set of Portuguese brass balance scales with enormous presence.
