Russian Kholui Lacquer Box Kizhi Hand Painted Miniature Signed Petrov

Russian Kholui Hand-Painted Lacquer Miniature Box – Kizhi – Signed Petrov

A beautifully detailed Russian lacquer miniature box, hand painted with an intricate architectural landscape depicting Kizhi, famous for its remarkable historic wooden churches and buildings.

The miniature is executed in the traditional Kholui lacquer painting style, featuring exceptionally fine architectural detail, stylised water and landscape, delicate gold-toned highlights and an ornate gold border set against a deep black lacquer ground.

The painting is signed in Cyrillic “Петров” (Petrov) along the lower edge.

The scene is dominated by the distinctive multi-domed wooden church architecture associated with Kizhi, surrounded by traditional timber buildings, trees, water and landscape. Close inspection reveals an impressive amount of fine brushwork, including individual roof timbers, windows, crosses and architectural details.

The box has a traditional black lacquer exterior with a contrasting rich red lacquered interior and papier-mâché construction.

A particularly attractive example of Russian lacquer miniature painting and a lovely piece for a collector of Russian decorative arts, lacquerware, architectural miniatures or hand-painted boxes.
