Antique Thai Bronze Seated Buddha – Rattanakosin Style – 28cm

A wonderfully atmospheric antique cast bronze Buddha figure from Thailand, believed to date from the 19th century / Rattanakosin period.

The Buddha is depicted seated in the traditional Bhumisparsha mudra, or earth-touching gesture, with the right hand extending towards the ground. The figure has an elegant elongated form with tightly curled hair, long earlobes, a tall flame-form ushnisha and a simply delineated monastic robe.

The styling shows characteristics associated with Thai Buddhist sculpture of the Rattanakosin period, while retaining influences from earlier Thai sculptural traditions.

Particularly attractive is the wonderfully aged surface. The bronze has developed a rich, varied patina of deep brown, black, copper and verdigris green, with areas of warmer golden colour visible across the face and raised details.

The underside reveals the hollow cast construction and substantial natural-looking oxidation and verdigris within the interior.

A characterful piece with considerably more presence than many later decorative Buddha figures.

Condition

The figure is in antique condition with substantial age-related surface wear, oxidation, verdigris, pitting, rubbing and areas of surface loss.

There is considerable patination and oxidation both externally and within the hollow underside, as shown clearly in the photographs. There are also small casting irregularities and areas of wear consistent with the character of an old hand-finished bronze.

The surface has intentionally not been polished or restored, preserving its existing patina.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

Dating antique Asian bronzes precisely can be difficult without documented provenance. The 19th-century/Rattanakosin attribution is therefore offered as an informed assessment based upon the figure’s form, construction, styling and apparent age rather than as a documented provenance.

A striking decorative and collectable example of Thai Buddhist art with a beautifully time-worn surface.
