A striking small Chinese cloisonné enamel vase, beautifully decorated with a colourful sinuous dragon against an unusually detailed black ground.
The dragon winds around the body of the vase, worked in vibrant yellow, turquoise, green, blue and red enamels. Particularly attractive is the dense background of individually outlined scrolling cloud motifs, created in fine metal wire and giving the dark ground a wonderfully intricate appearance.
The neck is finished with traditional stylised cloud and pendant borders in turquoise and blue, while further wave-like decoration surrounds the foot. Exposed brass-toned metal rims finish the mouth and base.
The vase has a pleasing baluster form and, despite its relatively small proportions, carries an impressive amount of decorative detail.
I believe this to be a Chinese cloisonné piece dating to approximately the early 20th century, circa 1900-1930. It is unmarked, so the dating is an attribution based on its construction, decoration and appearance rather than a documented maker or period mark.
Measurements:
* Height: approximately 13 cm
* Maximum diameter: approximately 7.5 cm
Condition:
Good antique/vintage condition overall with age-related surface wear, small scratches, marks and areas of minor enamel wear/pitting visible on close inspection. The exposed metal has developed natural variation and patination with age.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description and show the condition in detail.
A particularly decorative example of Chinese cloisonné, with the dramatic black ground providing a wonderful contrast to the brightly coloured dragon. An attractive cabinet piece for a collection of Asian art, antique enamel or cloisonné.
