A beautiful matched pair of antique Japanese miniature cloisonné enamel vases dating from the Meiji period, circa 1890–1910.
Each vase has a wonderfully rich coppery brown enamel ground with a subtle sparkling quality, decorated with colourful butterflies amongst flowers and scrolling foliage.
The bodies are finished with striking turquoise geometric enamel bands around the shoulders and bases, together with dark enamelled necks and fine metal rims.
Although forming a matched pair, the individual butterfly and floral decoration varies between the two, giving each vase its own character.
Their particularly small scale makes them charming examples of Japanese Meiji cloisonné and ideal for a cabinet collection.
