A beautiful matching pair of vintage Chinese cloisonné ginger jars, dating to approximately the mid-20th century, probably circa 1960s.
These substantial jars have a particularly striking turquoise-blue ground covered with intricate scrolling cloud-form wirework. Each is decorated with flowering prunus branches in pink, blue and white enamels, together with colourful butterflies.
The decoration continues across the removable lids, while the shoulders are finished with traditional multicoloured borders. Brass rims and foot rims provide a warm contrast against the vivid turquoise enamel.
One base retains part of its original paper “MADE IN CHINA” label.
The exceptionally dense cloud-pattern wirework is one of the most attractive features of the pair and gives the turquoise ground tremendous texture when viewed closely.
Approximate measurements:
Height: 19 cm each
Maximum diameter: 15 cm each
Weight:
Jar 1: 748 g
Jar 2: 778 g
Combined weight: approximately 1.53 kg
Condition:
Good vintage condition overall with age-related surface wear and patination. There are areas of fine enamel cracking/stress and small imperfections/losses consistent with age and manufacture, which can be seen in the photographs. The brass has developed some natural patination.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
A wonderfully decorative and substantial matching pair, particularly effective displayed together. The rich turquoise ground, blossom decoration and extraordinarily detailed cloud wirework make these much more visually interesting than many later mass-produced cloisonné pieces.
Dating: Mid-20th century, approximately c.1960s
Origin: China
Material: Cloisonné enamel over metal with brass fittings
The jars will be individually wrapped and carefully packed for safe delivery.
