Antique Japanese Meiji Period Cloisonné Dragon & Phoenix Vase – c.1890

A striking and substantial antique Japanese cloisonné enamel vase dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912), believed to date to around c.1890.

The vase has a beautifully proportioned baluster body with a tall flared neck and is decorated in an exceptionally rich palette of deep blue, red, green, pink, cream, black and shimmering gold-toned enamels.

The decoration is arranged in elaborate shield-shaped panels featuring traditional Japanese imagery, most notably a wonderfully detailed dragon and hō-ō (phoenix), surrounded by stylised flowers, scrolling ornament and geometric borders.

Particularly attractive are the sparkling aventurine-style enamel areas, which catch the light beautifully and give the decoration considerable depth.

The cloisonné work is formed with fine metal wires over a metal body, with exposed metal rims to the mouth and foot. The interior and recessed base are finished in blue enamel.

This is a genuine Meiji-period antique, rather than a later reproduction, and is a particularly decorative example of Japanese cloisonné from the great period of Japanese enamel production during the late 19th century.

Condition

In excellent antique condition for its age.

There is some fine age-related surface crazing/hairlining to areas of the enamel, together with minor marks and surface wear consistent with a piece dating from the late 19th century. Please see the detailed photographs, which form an important part of the condition description.

The vase displays exceptionally well, retaining strong, vibrant colours and a wonderful depth of enamel.

A substantial and highly decorative piece of Japanese Meiji-period cloisonné, particularly appealing for its combination of dragon and phoenix imagery.

It would make an impressive addition to a collection of Japanese cloisonné, Meiji-period decorative arts or antique Asian metalwork.
