Antique Chinese Bronze Qilin / Kylin Pair – Late Qing Dynasty, circa 1890
A wonderfully characterful pair of antique Chinese bronze mythical beasts, believed to represent Qilin (Kylin) and dating to the late Qing period, circa 1880–1910.
Each beast is individually cast with an elaborate dragon-like horned head, open mouth, richly modelled mane, decorated body and long curling tail terminating in a smaller mythical beast or dragon-form finial.
Although clearly conceived as a pair, there are fascinating subtle differences between the two figures, including their surface colour and individual casting details. One has developed a deeper brown bronze patina, while the other retains a warmer golden bronze tone.
The figures are hollow cast and surprisingly substantial for their size, weighing over half a kilogram each.
Measurements approximately:
Height: 12 cm
Length: 12 cm
Width: 7 cm
Weights:
Darker figure: 568 g
Lighter figure: 578 g
Combined weight: 1.146 kg
The undersides show the original hollow casting and hand-finished feet. Areas of natural oxidation and verdigris are present, particularly within recesses and underneath, giving the pair a wonderful aged appearance.
Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related surface wear, patination, oxidation and casting irregularities as expected from pieces of this age. Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description.
The figures have deliberately not been polished, preserving their contrasting historic surfaces and patina.
An unusual and highly decorative pair with tremendous character, ideal for a collector of Chinese bronzes, Asian antiques or mythical beast and Qilin imagery.
Dating: Late Qing Dynasty, approximately 1880–1910 / circa 1890.
Material: Bronze / copper alloy.
