A wonderfully unusual antique figural pepperette modelled as a standing eagle or bird of prey, dating to approximately the early 20th century.
The bird is beautifully modelled with a pronounced hooked beak, expressive eyes and detailed feathering across the body, wings and tail. The head unscrews from the body and forms the pepper shaker top, with a series of pierced holes incorporated into the crown.
The piece appears to be made from a dark patinated copper-alloy metal, most likely bronze or brass, with an attractive naturally aged surface. The threaded collar has a warmer brass tone and shows some verdigris consistent with age.
A particularly characterful piece of antique novelty tableware and a lovely little decorative object in its own right. The eagle has tremendous personality and would sit beautifully amongst a collection of antique metalware, animal miniatures or curiosities.
Approximate measurements:
Height: 8.5 cm
Diameter at widest point: 3.5 cm
Date: Circa 1900-1930
Origin: Probably Continental European
Material: Patinated copper-alloy metal, believed bronze/brass
Condition: Good antique condition with surface wear, patination, oxidation and marks consistent with age and use. The head unscrews as intended. Please study the photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description.
No maker’s marks or hallmarks have been identified, so the exact maker and country of manufacture remain unknown.
A charming and rather eccentric survivor from the age of elaborate novelty table accessories.
