A beautiful vintage Russian lacquer miniature box featuring a finely hand-painted architectural scene with colourful onion domes, churches and extensive gold detailing.
The scene is believed to depict the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius at Sergiev Posad, one of Russia’s best-known historic monastery complexes. The miniature is particularly attractive for its small size, with individually painted windows, rooftops, crosses and architectural details set against a deep black ground.
An elaborate hand-painted gold foliate border surrounds the scene, with further gold decoration around the sides. There is also a hand-painted inscription/signature along the lower edge of the miniature, although I have not been able to confidently identify the artist.
The box has the traditional contrasting red interior and a hinged lid.
Measurements:
Approximately 7 cm × 7 cm × 4 cm at the widest points.
Condition:
Vintage condition with some light age-related wear and small marks to the lacquer, as shown in the photographs. The painting remains bright and highly decorative. Please study all photographs as these form an important part of the description.
A lovely small example of Russian decorative lacquer art and an attractive piece for a collection of Russian folk art, lacquer miniatures or unusual decorative boxes.
