A wonderfully decorative matched pair of vintage Chinese cloisonné enamel elephants, each beautifully worked in rich cobalt blue with colourful floral and cloud-like motifs picked out in fine gilt wire.
The elephants have particularly characterful elongated trunks and are finished with applied gilt-metal ears, tusks and tails. Across their backs are contrasting pale enamel panels filled with colourful floral decoration in pink, turquoise, green and burgundy.
They make a striking pair when displayed together and have plenty of character, with the small variations associated with individually made and hand-finished decorative pieces.
Dimensions of each elephant:
Approximately 18.5cm long × 4.5cm wide × 7cm high
Weight:
Approximately 164g each
Origin:
Chinese
Material:
Cloisonné enamel over a hollow metal body with gilt-metal detailing
Date:
Vintage, likely second half of the 20th century
Condition:
Good vintage condition overall with age-related wear, rubbing and oxidation to the exposed and gilt metal surfaces. There are small irregularities and signs of age associated with their construction and use. Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the condition description.
The undersides of the feet remain exposed and show natural age and surface wear.
A particularly attractive pair with wonderful colour and an unusual, almost whimsical form. Ideal for a cloisonné collection, Asian-inspired interior or simply as a pair of distinctive decorative objects.
Sold as the pair.
