A characterful antique bronze figure of the seated Buddha, believed to originate from Thailand and probably dating to the 19th century.
The Buddha is depicted seated upon a tiered lotus pedestal, wearing a simple monastic robe with decorative detailing over one shoulder. Particularly appealing features include the serene, sensitively modelled face, elongated earlobes and tightly formed curls covering the head.
The bronze has developed a wonderful naturally aged surface, predominantly deep brown-black with areas of green verdigris and copper oxidation. Wear and irregularities to the casting contribute greatly to its authentic antique character.
The figure is hollow cast and feels surprisingly substantial for its relatively compact size, weighing approximately 630g.
Approximate dimensions:
Height: 14.5 cm
Base: 8.4 × 7.5 cm
Weight: 630g
Material: Bronze
Origin: Thailand, probably Northern Thailand
Date: Believed to be 19th century
Condition:
Good antique condition with considerable age-related patination, surface wear, oxidation, casting irregularities and deposits throughout. There is green verdigris particularly around the lower areas and underside. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
The bronze has deliberately not been polished or aggressively cleaned, preserving the attractive surface and patina it has acquired over many years.
A wonderfully atmospheric small devotional bronze with considerably more presence than its size might suggest. It would make an appealing addition to a collection of Southeast Asian art, Buddhist objects or antique bronzes.
Please note that the attribution and dating are based on the figure’s style, construction and appearance and are not supported by documentary provenance.
