A striking and substantial antique Japanese cloisonné enamel charger dating to the Meiji period, most likely the late 19th century, circa 1880-1900.

Measuring an impressive 36.5 cm (approximately 14.4 inches) in diameter and weighing 1.294 kg, this is a beautifully decorative example of Japanese cloisonné made during the remarkable flowering of the art in the Meiji era.

The charger centres on an elaborate ho-o, or Japanese phoenix, worked in exceptionally detailed cloisonné wirework. The bird is surrounded by richly patterned concentric borders incorporating stylised flowers, foliage and geometric ornament in a wonderfully characteristic Meiji palette of turquoise, blue, green, cream, pink and terracotta against darker grounds.

One of the particularly attractive features is the reverse. Rather than being left plain, it is extensively enamelled in a repeating turquoise-blue fish-scale pattern, with the decoration continuing around the raised foot. This form of decorated reverse is seen on other documented Japanese Meiji cloisonné chargers of the period.

The central phoenix is especially impressive when viewed closely, with numerous individual metal cloisons used to define the feathers and intricate details. The scale of the charger combined with the density of the decoration makes it a superb display piece.

The piece is unsigned and I have therefore deliberately not attributed it to a particular workshop or maker. Based on its construction, decorative vocabulary, cloisonné technique and distinctive enamelled reverse, I believe a Japanese Meiji attribution and late 19th-century date are well supported.

Condition

Good antique condition overall for a piece of this age and size.

There is age-related surface wear including scratching, small pits and firing imperfections to the enamel, together with other minor marks and imperfections consistent with age and manufacture. These are particularly apparent under strong reflected light but considerably less conspicuous during normal display.

I have not identified any large areas of enamel loss or major structural damage.

Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. I am very happy to provide additional photographs if required.
