Striking vintage hand-blown Italian art glass vase, dating approximately to the 1960s-1970s.

A wonderfully dramatic piece of mid-century glass, standing an impressive 31 cm tall, with an exceptionally long slender neck, double-bulb lower body and a beautifully hand-worked flared rim.

The vase is made with alternating vertical bands of translucent orange/coral glass and opaque white glass, creating a wonderful candy-stripe effect. The stripes follow the contours of the vase from the rounded base, through the double-bulb body and elongated neck, before spreading into the undulating rim.

The combination of colour, scale and exaggerated form makes this a particularly decorative piece of vintage art glass.

Attribution & Dating

I believe this vase to be Italian art glass, most likely dating from the 1960s-1970s.

The attribution is based upon several characteristics visible in the piece rather than a maker’s label or signature.

The vase is clearly individually worked rather than mould-produced. The vertical coloured and opaque white bands are incorporated into the glass itself and continue naturally through the changing contours of the body and rim. The pronounced double-bulb form, extraordinarily elongated neck and hand-tooled flared rim are also characteristic of Italian decorative glass production of the mid-20th century.

The underside retains a substantial irregular pontil/worked area, providing further evidence of traditional hand-blown manufacture.

Orange and white striped glass of this general type was produced by Venetian/Murano glassmakers during the mid-century period. However, related striped and cased decorative glass was also produced by glasshouses in and around Empoli, Tuscany.

For that reason, although a Murano/Venetian origin is certainly possible, I do not believe there is sufficient evidence to attribute the vase confidently to Murano or to a particular factory. I therefore describe it conservatively as Italian art glass.

Attribution confidence:
Italian origin: high confidence
Mid-century / c.1960s-1970s: high confidence
Murano/Venetian manufacture: possible, but unconfirmed
Specific maker: unknown

This deliberately cautious attribution reflects the absence of a surviving factory label or signature.

Condition

The vase displays beautifully and retains a lovely glossy surface.

There is a small nick/chip to one section of the shaped rim, which has been photographed closely and is reflected in the price. Because of the naturally undulating form of the hand-worked rim, it is considerably less noticeable during normal display.

There may also be minor surface marks and manufacturing irregularities consistent with the vase’s age and handmade nature. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

Dimensions

Height: 31 cm
Maximum diameter: approximately 9 cm

A fabulous piece of vintage Italian glass with tremendous height and presence, particularly striking displayed on its own where the long striped silhouette can really be appreciated.
