A beautiful and unusually decorative matched pair of antique Japanese cloisonné enamel vases, dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912), most likely the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.
These elegant bottle-shaped vases are particularly striking examples of Japanese cloisonné, with an extraordinary amount of decoration incorporated into their relatively compact size.
Each vase has a rounded body rising to a long slender neck and flared metal rim. The decoration is wonderfully elaborate, combining rich red, cobalt blue, turquoise, pink, yellow, green, white and cream enamels.
The bodies are covered with a fascinating variety of densely worked designs, including stylised flowers, butterfly-like motifs, overlapping scale patterns, geometric ornament and brocade-inspired decoration.
Particularly impressive is the extensive use of fine cloison wire. The deep red necks contain tightly arranged individual spiral cloisons, while the shoulders incorporate numerous contrasting patterns separated by bold white geometric borders.
Shield-shaped reserves around the lower bodies contain colourful stylised motifs against finely speckled cream enamel grounds, with further decorative panels set against the rich dark blue lower ground.
Although clearly conceived as a pair, the individual patterns and colours vary between the two vases, giving each its own character while maintaining the same overall design, proportions and decorative scheme.
The undersides are unmarked with exposed metal foot rims showing natural age-related wear and patination.

The metalwork has been left with its existing patina rather than aggressively polished.

A particularly appealing surviving pair of Japanese Meiji cloisonné, displaying exceptionally rich colour and an impressive variety of intricate wirework and enamel decoration.
They would make a wonderful addition to a collection of Japanese decorative arts, Meiji-period cloisonné or antique Asian enamels.
