Antique Chinese Qing Cloisonné Enamel Box, 19th Century Figural Lidded Box

$266.00

Shipping to United States: $49.01

A wonderfully characterful antique Chinese cloisonné enamel lidded box, dating to the Qing Dynasty and believed to be 19th century.

The box is richly decorated in traditional cloisonné enamels against an unusual black ground, densely worked with individually formed scrolling cloud motifs in fine metal wire.

The domed lid features a colourful traditional Chinese figure surrounded by auspicious objects and motifs, including what appears to be a Chinese cash coin with its characteristic square central opening. The imagery may be associated with prosperity, abundance and good fortune.

The decoration continues around the body of the box, making this a particularly attractive example from every angle.

The enamel palette includes turquoise blue, green, red, pink, yellow and white, contrasting beautifully with the deep black ground. Both the interior of the lid and the interior of the base are finished in a rich blue enamel.

Condition

Antique condition with wear and surface marks consistent with age and use. The enamels display the small pits, inclusions and irregularities characteristic of traditional cloisonné work.

There is dark surface residue/accretion around areas of the recessed foot. This has deliberately been left untouched and has not been cleaned or removed.

Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the condition description.

An unusual and highly decorative piece of antique Chinese cloisonné, particularly appealing for its figural subject, extensive cloud-scroll wirework and striking black ground.
