Vintage Russian Hand-Painted Lacquer Box – Soviet Folk Art Architectural Scene
A charming vintage Russian lacquer box featuring a wonderfully stylised hand-painted architectural scene depicting traditional Russian churches, towers and buildings.
The miniature is painted against a glossy black ground in soft shades of cream, green, red and grey, with hand-applied gold detailing and an attractive scrolling gold border. The deliberately stylised buildings give the piece a distinctive Russian folk-art character.
Cyrillic inscriptions are painted around the composition, apparently relating to the subject/location and possibly including further identifying information. I have not attempted to attribute the box to one of the principal Russian lacquer miniature schools, and it is offered more conservatively as a vintage Soviet/Russian folk-art lacquer box.
The painting appears to be hand executed rather than a printed transfer, with individual brushwork clearly visible in the close-up photographs.
Approximate dimensions:
8 cm long
4.5 cm wide
3 cm high
Condition:
Good vintage condition overall with some light surface marks, scratches and minor age-related wear to the lacquer, particularly visible on the underside. There are also tiny areas of edge wear consistent with age and use. The painted decoration remains bright and attractive. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
A lovely little example of Russian decorative folk art and an appealing addition to a collection of Soviet-era lacquerware, Russian boxes or miniature painting.
