A charming vintage Russian lacquer miniature box, decorated with a colourful hand-painted floral composition and delicate gold detailing.
The central oval panel features an abundant arrangement of pink, blue, yellow and red flowers against the traditional black lacquer ground, surrounded by finely painted scrolling gold ornament.
What makes this example particularly appealing is its unusual double-tier construction. The decorated upper box opens to reveal a vivid red lacquered interior, while the complete upper section lifts to reveal a second, larger compartment beneath.
The inscription alongside the painted panel appears to include “Мстёра” (Mstyora), associating the piece with the Russian Mstyora lacquer miniature tradition. As I have not been able to identify the individual painter with certainty, it is being described conservatively as a Mstyora / Mstyora-style Russian lacquer box rather than attributed to a particular artist.
Approximate dimensions:
8 cm × 6 cm × 5 cm
(3.15 × 2.36 × 1.97 inches)
Condition:
Good vintage condition with light surface and age-related wear. The lacquer remains glossy and the colourful floral decoration displays beautifully. Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description.
A lovely decorative and collectible example of Russian folk art, with the double-box form making it considerably more unusual than the standard single-compartment lacquer trinket box.
