A charming and unusual vintage Russian lacquer trinket box featuring a colourful hand-painted folk-art scene with a figure beside a dramatic spider and web design.
What makes this example particularly interesting is its double-box construction. The smaller upper hinged box lifts to reveal a second larger compartment beneath, both finished internally in the traditional rich red colour associated with Russian lacquerware.
The miniature decoration is executed in a lively folk-art style, with fine gold-coloured detailing used extensively throughout the spider’s web and the scrolling ornament surrounding the central scene.
This appears to be a genuine hand-decorated piece rather than a simple printed image, although the painting is more naïve in character than the highly refined miniature work associated with the principal Palekh, Kholuy, Mstyora and Fedoskino schools. As there is no firm attribution visible, I am therefore offering it simply as a vintage Russian-style hand-painted lacquer box.
Dimensions:
Approximately 7 cm × 7 cm × 6 cm high
Condition:
Vintage condition with age-related surface wear, marks and areas of wear to the painted and gilt decoration, particularly visible within the main painted scene. The wear has been left untouched and forms part of the character of the piece.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description and show the condition, construction and decoration in detail.
A particularly attractive little piece for a collection of Russian lacquerware, folk art or decorative boxes, with the unusual two-tier design making it rather different from the more commonly encountered single-compartment examples.
