Vintage Russian Mstyora Double Lacquer Box – Suzdal Cathedral – Two Tier Hand Painted Box
A particularly unusual Russian lacquer box featuring a two-tier / double compartment construction, with each section independently hinged and opening to reveal a traditional rich red lacquered interior.
The upper lid is decorated with a hand-painted miniature depicting one of the distinctive historic churches of Suzdal, surrounded by trees against a dark blue and black ground. The scene is framed with finely applied gold-coloured scrolling and dotted ornament.
The inscription beneath the miniature reads “Суздаль Мстёра” (Suzdal – Mstyora), associating the piece with the traditional Russian lacquer miniature style of Mstyora.
What makes this example especially appealing is its unusual architectural construction. Rather than being a conventional single trinket box, it comprises two stacked storage compartments, creating the stepped profile visible in the photographs. Both sections have their own hinged lids.
The black lacquered exterior is complemented by vivid red interiors and delicate gold decoration around the sides.
Likely dating from the late Soviet / post-Soviet period, approximately late 20th century.
Dimensions:
Approx. 7.5 cm × 7.5 cm
Approx. 6.5 cm high
Condition:
Vintage condition with some light surface wear and marks consistent with age and previous handling. There is residue from an old label to the underside. The hinges are functioning and both compartments open as intended. Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description.
An unusual variation on the traditional Russian lacquer miniature box and an attractive piece for a collection of Russian folk art, Mstyora lacquerware or miniature painting.
