Vintage Russian Kholuy lacquer miniature box featuring a traditional Troika winter scene, signed “Serov” in Cyrillic.
A particularly attractive example of Russian lacquer miniature art, decorated with a wonderfully colourful winter scene depicting a traditional three-horse Troika pulling a sleigh through a snowy Russian landscape.
The miniature is finely hand painted against the characteristic black lacquer ground, with detailed horses, figures, architecture and landscape picked out with delicate gold-coloured line work. An elaborate scrolling gold floral border surrounds the central composition.
The painting is inscribed “Тройка” (Troika) and signed “Серов” (Serov).
There is a documented Kholuy miniature artist named Vladimir Nikolaevich Serov, born in 1952 and trained at the Kholuy Art School. While the signature and style are interesting, I have not independently authenticated this box as his work, so it is offered simply as signed Serov rather than with a definitive artist attribution.
The box has a traditional glossy black lacquer exterior with a striking red lacquered interior and hinged lid.
Dimensions:
11.5 cm × 8 cm × 3 cm
Approx. 4.5 × 3.1 × 1.2 inches
Condition:
Good vintage condition overall. There is age-related surface wear, including scratching and marks to the underside and some minor wear consistent with age and previous handling. The painted miniature remains extremely attractive, colourful and displays beautifully. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
A lovely decorative and collectable example of Russian miniature painting, particularly appealing for its classic Troika subject and signed composition.
