Vintage Original Oil Painting – The Victoria Embankment, London – Signed R. Adams

A wonderfully atmospheric vintage oil painting depicting Victoria Embankment in London, with Cleopatra’s Needle visible beside the River Thames.

The artist has captured a particularly evocative London scene, with figures walking along the rain-soaked Embankment, bare trees, period street lamps and horse-drawn traffic. Reflections across the wet pavement and the restrained grey, green and ochre palette give the painting a beautifully moody quality.

The work is signed “R. Adams” to the lower right. I have not been able to establish a firm attribution for the artist and therefore offer the painting on the strength of the work itself rather than attributing it to a particular listed artist.

The painting is presented in its substantial vintage wooden frame with gilt outer detailing and a linen-effect inner slip. A small metal plaque mounted to the frame is inscribed:

“The Victoria Embankment”

The reverse shows the original stretched canvas construction and provides a lovely indication that this is a genuine painted work rather than a modern decorative print.

A very appealing piece of vintage British art and a particularly good choice for a collector of London paintings, British street scenes or atmospheric urban artwork. It would make a striking addition to a traditional, period or eclectic interior.

Condition:
Vintage condition with age-related wear to the painting and frame, including some surface marks and wear to the frame consistent with age. There appears to be some craquelure/surface ageing visible in areas of the painted surface. The frame also has rubbing and losses to the gilt finish. These signs of age form part of the character of the piece. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
