A beautiful vintage Russian lacquer box, hand painted with a colourful floral composition and signed by the artist Vladykin, dated 1993.

The square box features a wonderfully traditional arrangement of roses and smaller flowers against a glossy black ground, surrounded by delicate gold-coloured ornamental detailing. The visible individual brushstrokes and layered highlights give the flowers and foliage considerable character.

The lid is signed in Cyrillic “Владыкин 93 г.” (Vladykin, 1993).

The underside carries a further hand-written inscription:

“худ. Владыкин”
“Made in Russia”
“1993 г.”

The first line abbreviates the Russian word for artist and identifies Vladykin as the artist.

The floral decoration is executed in the tradition of Russian Zhostovo-style flower painting, famous for richly coloured bouquets painted against dark backgrounds.

Dating precisely to 1993, this is also an interesting piece of early post-Soviet Russian decorative art, produced only shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

The box has a removable lift-off lid and a striking traditional red lacquered interior.
