Vintage Russian Hand-Painted Lacquer Trinket Box – Winter Folk Art Scene

A charming vintage Russian lacquer box featuring a colourful hand-painted miniature depicting a traditional winter folk scene.

The central composition shows a brightly dressed figure standing within a snowy village landscape, accompanied by a striking white bird or swan. Traditional architecture, stylised trees and finely applied decorative details give the scene a wonderfully distinctive Russian folklore character.

The miniature is surrounded by delicate silver/white floral and dotted decoration against the glossy black lacquer ground. The unusual softly triangular shape makes this particularly attractive and a little different from the more commonly encountered rectangular Russian lacquer boxes.

The box appears to be constructed from a traditional composition/papier-mâché type material with a lacquered finish.

There appears to be faint hand-applied lettering or an inscription around the lower portion of the miniature, although this is indistinct and I have therefore not attempted to attribute the piece to a particular artist or Russian lacquer school.

Condition:
Vintage condition with age-related surface wear, including visible scratches, marks and scuffing to the black lacquer and some wear to the decorated areas. These signs of age can be seen in the photographs and have been reflected in the price. The colourful miniature nevertheless remains very attractive and displays beautifully.
