Robert Ritchie (1934–2002) – “Winter, Cheviot Hills”

A beautiful original oil painting by Northumberland landscape artist Robert Ritchie, depicting the Cheviot Hills under winter snow.

The painting captures a wonderfully atmospheric Northumbrian winter landscape, with snow-covered ground, dark hedgerows and fence posts leading the eye towards the distant hills. Tiny grazing animals can be seen across the open fields, while delicate winter grasses rise through the snow in the foreground.

Ritchie has handled the winter light particularly well, using subtle blue and grey tones through the snow and distant hills, contrasted against the warmer ochre landscape beyond.

The work is signed R. Ritchie lower right.

Importantly, the reverse of the canvas carries a handwritten inscription identifying the subject as:

“Winter – Cheviot Hills”

with additional location information beneath.

The painting also retains an original Tallantyre Gallery, Morpeth, Northumberland label to the reverse. Tallantyre Gallery specialised in original paintings, providing useful provenance for the work and reinforcing its Northumberland connection.

Robert Ritchie was a Northumberland artist associated particularly with landscapes of the region, including views of the Northumberland countryside and coast.

Presented in an attractive substantial gilt and dark-toned frame with decorative inner moulding. The frame complements the muted winter palette beautifully and the painting is ready to display.

The painting presents very well, with attractive colour and detail throughout. The frame has some minor age-related marks and wear consistent with a previously displayed vintage work. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

The reverse, including the original inscription and Tallantyre Gallery label, has deliberately been photographed and retained as part of the painting’s history and provenance.

A particularly appealing example of Ritchie’s Northumberland landscape painting, combining a named Cheviot Hills subject, winter atmosphere, original signature and local gallery provenance.
