Vintage Kholuy Russian Lacquer Box Signed Hand Painted Cranes Miniature

Beautiful vintage Russian Kholuy lacquer miniature box, featuring a finely hand-painted scene of two white cranes flying across a traditional landscape.

The miniature is painted against a glossy black lacquer ground, with wonderful detail throughout the birds, buildings, trees and landscape. Delicate gold-coloured decoration runs around the lower edge, while the interior is finished in the characteristic rich red lacquer.

The painting is signed/inscribed by the artist along the lower edge of the lid. The inscription is visible in the photographs, although I have not been able to confidently identify the individual artist.

Kholuy is one of the celebrated Russian centres of traditional lacquer miniature painting, alongside Palekh, Mstyora and Fedoskino, and is particularly associated with highly detailed hand-painted miniature scenes.

A lovely small example with an unusual and very decorative crane subject, ideal for a collector of Russian lacquer miniatures or as a special jewellery or keepsake box.
