A striking vintage Chinese openwork dragon bowl featuring deeply pierced dragons emerging from swirling cloud motifs, with Buddhist-inspired symbols decorating the interior, including an endless knot motif. Richly sculpted and wonderfully tactile, this is an eye-catching decorative object that displays beautifully from every angle.

Based on its construction, decoration and age-related wear, this bowl is believed to be made from a traditional composition material, rather than carved from solid wood. Composition materials such as lacquer mixed with natural fillers, wood flour or mineral compounds were used in China to create finely detailed decorative objects, producing pieces that were both durable and capable of holding exceptionally intricate relief carving.

The bowl has developed a rich dark patina over time, with attractive warm highlights visible on areas of natural wear. The exposed material at historic losses suggests a dense composition with a pigmented outer surface, adding to its character and supporting its vintage appearance.

The decoration features finely modelled dragons amongst swirling cloud motifs, while the interior incorporates traditional Buddhist-inspired symbols. The quality of the modelling and the fully finished underside suggest this was produced as a high-quality decorative object rather than a simple souvenir piece.

Although the exact date of manufacture cannot be confirmed, it is considered most likely to date from the mid-20th century (circa 1950s-1960s).
