Fine Antique Japanese Meiji Cloisonné Enamel Charger
A beautiful and finely crafted Japanese cloisonné enamel charger dating to the late Meiji period, circa 1885-1905.
This impressive charger displays an elegant naturalistic composition featuring flowering peonies, plum blossom, birds in flight and a butterfly against a vibrant turquoise blue enamel ground. The scene is framed by an attractive stylised border, while the reverse is finished with a decorative spiral enamel design, a feature often associated with quality Meiji cloisonné.
The workmanship is exceptionally refined, with very fine wirework throughout and carefully shaded enamels that create depth and movement. The composition is balanced yet lively, capturing the beauty of a Japanese spring garden in full bloom.
Unlike the more commonly encountered dragon or phoenix designs, this charger represents the sophisticated naturalistic style that became highly sought after during the Meiji period.
Condition
Very good antique condition.
The charger displays age-related enamel crazing, entirely consistent with its age, together with very light signs of handling. I can find no significant enamel losses, cracks or restorations, allowing it to display beautifully.
