A beautiful antique Japanese cloisonné enamel cabinet vase dating to the late Meiji or early Taishō period (circa 1895 to 1915).
This elegant example features a vibrant turquoise blue enamel ground decorated with flowering cherry blossom, plum blossom and beautifully detailed long-tailed birds amongst flowering branches. The decoration flows continuously around the body without panel divisions, demonstrating the refined naturalistic style for which Japanese cloisonné became renowned during the Meiji period.
The fine brass wirework is neatly executed throughout, with crisp colour separation and a pleasing, well-polished enamel surface. The interior retains its original pale turquoise enamel, displaying the age-related crazing often found on authentic Meiji cloisonné pieces. The bronze rims have developed an attractive natural patina consistent with age.
Although unsigned, the quality, colour palette and workmanship strongly suggest production by a skilled Japanese workshop, most likely in Kyoto, during the golden age of Japanese cloisonné.
This is a wonderful collector’s cabinet piece that displays beautifully from every angle.
Condition
Very good antique condition.
No obvious dents, losses or repairs noted. Light surface wear and natural age-related patina commensurate with over 100 years of age. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
