$132.96

Shipping to United States: $49.01

Beautiful vintage Russian lacquer miniature box depicting Prince Dmitry Donskoy, one of the most important figures in medieval Russian history and the victor of the famous Battle of Kulikovo in 1380.

This hand-painted lacquer box features a striking portrait of Dmitry Donskoy in armour and ceremonial cloak, accompanied by military standards, Orthodox Christian imagery and a haloed image of Christ. A medallion depicting Saint George slaying the dragon appears in the lower corner, reinforcing the religious and patriotic symbolism of the piece.

Unlike the more commonly encountered Russian fairy tale subjects such as the Firebird or Troika scenes, this box celebrates a significant historical figure and military victory, making it particularly appealing to collectors of Russian history, Orthodox art and lacquer miniatures.

The artwork is richly detailed and framed by traditional decorative borders in gold and silver tones. The box is signed by the artist and decorated with a continuous Cyrillic inscription running around all four sides.

The sides of the box feature a quotation written in archaic Russian or Church Slavonic style script. While difficult to fully decipher due to age and the curvature of the box, the text appears to celebrate sacrifice, faith, victory and glory associated with Dmitry Donskoy and the Battle of Kulikovo.
